Why You Should Join a Wine Club
If you have ever considered joining a wine club, I’m here to tell you why you should join a wine club!
Wine clubs are a great way to get amazing wine vetted by experts, to socialize, and to reap the perks of a membership.
If you’re a wine drinker, why not support a local wine club rather than a big national grocery store? Regardless of how much wine you consume, there’s a club for you. There are clubs that cater to people who drink a glass of wine a night and to those who only drink a bottle a month. Many clubs have different subscription options. If you’re a wine drinker but have no experience and are intimidated, you should join a wine club because it’s a great place to learn about wine. There are so many good reasons to join a wine club. Below are my favorites.
Why you should join a wine club:
Tastings, perks, and discounts
If you like VIP status, then joining a club is a simple way to get it. When you pay for the wine club, you’re just paying for the cost of wine, and if you’re a wine drinker, you would spend money on wine anyway. If you join a wine club, not only do you get wine (arguably some of the best, and different wines you wouldn’t discover otherwise, but more on that later), but you also get discounts on more wine. Many wine clubs arrange a party when you pick up your monthly/quarterly/annual wine subscription. These parties not only have free pours and tastings, but also a lot of the time food and what tends to be a great party.
I belong to a wine club where there are several tiers in the membership, with one of the annual benefits being going to the owner’s home in France and doing a tasting at their table!
Why you should join a wine club:
The people
Wine clubs are a great way to meet like-minded wine drinkers. I was once at a wine club event, where, after a conversation with a retired couple that drinks wine and cruises the world, they handed me their card that featured their names and “Professional Wine Travelers”–if that’s not the ultimate coveted retirement position, I don’t know what is. I’ve also met people in their twenties just starting out on their wine tasting journey. At wine clubs you’ll meet people from all walks of life, making for an eclectic wine circle.
This last weekend I went into my local wine shop because my partner was dying to join the wine club. Even though we already belonged to two other clubs, we are new to the neighborhood and being the social butterfly he is, he wanted to meet wine drinkers who lived close to us.
Why you should join a wine club:
The wine is curated by experts just for you
In our nearby wine club, there’s a room dedicated to wines from Italy, one to wines from France, one to wines from Burgundy only, a room for bubbles and cool climate France…and the list goes on and on. On the premises is a woman whose entire job is to pick out the best wine, curate your wine club package for you, and help people when they walk in. If that doesn’t prove the difference of having a local expert helping you versus mindlessly wandering the aisles in Total Wine, what does? When I told the woman that over summer we don’t need any more red wine, she said she would pick us only whites.
Why you should join a wine club:
It’s the easiest and most efficient way to shop
Some wine clubs specialize in exact regions, just red wines, New World only, Old World only, or mixes of everything under the sun. Depending on your budget, there are wine clubs that have a set fee and also wine clubs that will work with your budget. This means if you spend $150 a quarter on your wine club pack, they may pick out three bottles for you or six–you get to choose! Usually wine clubs get a better deal on wines, so they pass some of that savings onto the members. This is a great way to save some money. If you can’t pick up your wine in person, they’ll mail your case to your house–talk about convenience.
There are clubs that come with detailed tasting cards and where you will learn all about the terroir and winemaking. There are also wine clubs that just deliver you great wine. Regardless of the experience you’re looking for, there’s a wine club for you.
And lastly I’ll leave you with this, you should join a wine club because wine makes you happy. Click here to read the studies to prove it.
